Day one in the swamp and hardwoods of Big Hill Pond. Day two on the water at Pickwick Lake. Barbecue and catfish in between.
McNairy County's own state park covers 4,138 acres in the southwest corner of the county.
1Start with the park's signature walk, a boardwalk of about a mile through the Dismal Swamp. It is flat, easy and great for kids.
2The 70-foot observation tower looks out over the treetops and Travis McNatt Lake. Bring a camera.
3Grab lunch in Ramer or Selmer, both a short drive from the park.
4Pick a loop that fits your legs: the Turkey Call Trail, the Azalea Spring Loop, or a longer push toward the backcountry shelters if you're staying out overnight.
5Camp at the park's 28-site campground, or head to a cabin or inn for a hot shower and a real bed.
A short drive east, Pickwick Lake on the Tennessee River is the region's big water: boating, fishing, swimming and lakeside lodging.
1Spend the morning on the lake. Pickwick Landing State Park and the marinas around Counce are the easiest places to launch, swim or simply watch the river traffic come through the locks at the dam.
2Catfish and hushpuppies are the local lunch on the river. Hagy's, a storied family-run spot near Shiloh, is the classic.
3Play a round, swing by the Shiloh battlefield on the way back west, or just enjoy the porch at your rental.
4Catch the sunset over the lake, then supper in Crump on the way home.
