A self-guided Civil War driving tour on the back roads around Michie, where armies camped, dug in and skirmished on the way to and from Shiloh.
The old town of Monterey, around today's Michie, sat on the road between Corinth, Mississippi and Pittsburg Landing in the spring of 1862. The trail's first stop marks Johnston's Camp, a Shiloh Park Commission marker for General Albert Sidney Johnston's Confederate army, and the stops that follow trace hospitals, rifle pits, entrenchments, skirmishes and camps through the surrounding countryside to the Mississippi state line.

The route loops off Highway 22 through Michie, Tulu and Acton, with numbered stops shown on the trail map. Start at the signboard, snap a photo of the map, and follow the numbers. The sign's QR code links to the trail's Facebook page for updates and events.
As listed on the trail map.

The 1st Division / Southern Re-Enactors Association, together with the Old Monterey Trail, presents Into the Hornets Nest, a three-day living history re-enactment in Michie marking 165 years since the Battle of Shiloh.
Michie is the closest Tennessee town to Shiloh National Military Park, so the trail makes a natural second half to a battlefield day.

See where the armies met on April 6–7, 1862: the Hornet's Nest, Bloody Pond, Shiloh Church and the national cemetery. Then drive the Old Monterey Trail to see the ground they crossed to get there.
